DataSpaceTime's Animated GIF Grid moving image installation works explore the thresholds of visual perception and recognition, disrupting the aesthetic and processes of video and animated GIFs made using original coding by the artists. A custom angular/node.js application is used to deconstruct original video clips into thousands of rotating animated GIFs. These are reassembled across a grid and offset in time to play in a localized browser window, not through video playback devices. An original Javascript application allows the work to randomly and infinitely cycle through sequences of animated GIF sets.
Animated GIF Grid works are deconstructed into as many as 25,000 animated GIFs and then reassembled across a grid of phasing pivot points to create moving image works that play in localized browser windows (not through video playback devices). Images from the original video play, slightly offset, on each of two 60 inch LED screens or a single 65 inch LED screen. Subtle changes in light, motion, and content between and within the grids challenge the viewer’s ability to recognize the familiar while experiencing minute details in new ways.
Animated GIF Grids are looping, live, generative, browser based single or double channel video installations. Monitor(s), custom computer, custom code included. Exhibition captures are possible under specific circumstances.
